Jane Eva Baxter has announced an exciting opportunity to contribute to an upcoming Society for the Study of Childhood in the Past (SSCIP) Monograph on 19th Century Childhoods:
I am currently seeking participants for a volume on 19th century childhoods that is international and interdisciplinary in scope. Individual contributions do not have to be interdisciplinary, but it the volume is designed to bring together a variety of disciplinary scholars working on topics related to 19th century childhoods. The global/international scope of the volume means contributions should situate scholarship within broad social/political/economic movements of the time, including colonialism, capitalism, and immigration and/or particular responses to such movements including nationalism, identity formation, and local resistance. The scope of this volume is intentionally broad but will be drawn together by building on these themes. Research situated in countries outside the US/UK is particularly welcome!
Potential topics (not exhaustive!):
– Children and consumption
– Childhood material culture
– Parenting, families, and domestic life
– Embodied childhoods
– Memory and Commemoration
– Institutions for children
– Education
– Children, labor and industry
– The symbolic value of childhood
This volume has already been approved by the SSCIP Board for inclusion in the series, and there is strong interest from the publisher of the SSCIP Monograph Series, Oxbow Books. Information on the Monograph Series can be found here.
